I have read in some places that some components in the kit are cheap. Is it worth me buying higher quality caps and resistors before I start putting my kit together. Are the caps in the kit likely to pop after awhile?
How many of you done/are doing this? Also has anyone got a online basket for the replacement caps/resistors.
Cheers

Dear JakeE,
You could use higher quality capacitor and resistor for the master parts to reduce signal/ noise .
You can find part list here

Okay thanks, some of the resistors in my kit(4th batch) are blue does this mean they are metal film already?
Yes it is worth buying higher quality resistors and electrolytic caps. I tested the resistors in my kit and they are way off in tolerance. The way you can test a resistor is easy. Connect both resistor leads to a volt meter and determine its value, and while still connected apply heat to the body of the resistor. I used a soldering iron (cool tip from Jürgen Haible, RIP). I found that the resistance decreased by up to 10 ohms or more. I'm not surprised since I have come across this problem before. I'm guessing that if you use these resistors the sounds will change slightly or more when the device warms up. The other issue is that the resistor leads are very thin. A bit too thin but that's how you cut costs. All in all these resistors will work but if you want higher quality you will need to upgrade.
I tested good quality resistors that I have from Mouser and they deviated by only 1 ohm for 1% metal film and less than 5 ohms for carbon types. As for the electro caps I am upgrading all of them to low ESR caps to reduce noise, and just to make sure my b0x will last for many years before it will need to be recapped. The polyester caps look ok, the leads are nice and thick which is good so im using them. Im not sure about the 4148 diodes, the leads on those are too thin for my taste. I determined that it will cost around $30 to upgrade all the resistors and electro caps. Thats not bad but I have a bunch of parts in my stock already so it will cost more if you get them all at once. Everything else in the kit looks good to me.
Here is a link to a Mouser parts list i created. It has all the ESR caps listed along with other parts I am reviewing,

Thank you for sharing your mouser list!
Does it contain all caps and resistors required for the yocto ? I see there is a Hammond box I'm the list -:)
Thank you

The mouser list includes all the electro caps, but not all the resistors. There are two different Hammond cases in the list but they have different dimensions. Im not sure which one to get yet. I will build my kit first before I determine which case to get.
Thanks for that cart, but I ordered some components a few days ago. I have chosen to change all the electro caps to low esr, to improve the snr and lifespan. Also I have replaced the resistors in the power and master section and a few others with metal film resistors not all of them as I didn't want to spend too much, hopefully it will all work okay mixed with the carbon film resistors in the kit.
Thanks for the info on how to check the tolerance seems pretty useful.
Also going to socket all ic's

Question for synthdood - why both metal film and carbon film 33K resistors? I see one has a better tolerance...where are you putting those?
By the way, this might be another minor upgrade for the wiring part, Mouser 538-39880-0302 connectors x 2.

I am using carbon since the original 808 uses all carbon resistors, but I am using metal film in areas of the circuit where audio is mixed down to an output for lower noise at that output.
Thanks, good to know.
By the way here is a Mouser part number for a 9-pin socket for the BA6110SIL in case anyone wants to socket this too. 855-D01-9900905
