Starting a build with a BOM & PCB from Fed/March

Hi - quick question - I assume the bundled Atmega with my (old?) kit is preprogrammed. I noticed one thread where a guy was asking about programming a chip that was now part of the BOM and flashing Yocto 2.0 firmware - so I am wondering, should I also get a new chip and put this firmware on it, or do I put this fw on my old chip, or is it a special version for the chip in the bom and the old one (i am guessing it is 1.0c) is fine. Some clarification would be super.
