Edit patterns longer than 16?

Is there any practical way to edit patterns longer than 16 when sequencer is running?
Either in chain mode or if it's possible to make a pattern longer than 16 like on the Yocto. I can't figure out how. In chain mode it's necessary to push Enter before a bar ends or the edits will be lost and this is very impractical, almost. Or is there some workaraound for this?
