Right,

so I've got the tempo encoder soldered in, pluggd in the Yocto, powered on, but still not working..

Again, depending on the position of the mode selector at the top left, I get some of the small LEDs lit.. I tried the EEPROM initialise but nothing happens.

However, after powering on while holding step buttons 1,3 & 5, I now have the first 8 steps (apart from step 3) lit up...

Weird.

Where to go from here?

Dear 4teenth,

I post a test program for sequencer part. Upload the Sysex "Yocto_Led_test" that you can find here.
This code allow you to test each buttons and leds. When you press a step button, corresponding leds will lit.
Tell me what's happen with this code.

Best regards,

Hmm... Not sure I can even upload the sysex -

LEDS 1-8 are lit when I power on, if i power on while holding steps 1,3 and 5, sometimes all LED light briefly, but that's it...

:?

Dear 4teenth,

Did you try to upload "Yocto_Led_Test" after leds lits ?

If you couldn't i think this is reset part of uC who is not working. Check that uC Pin 9 is high (+5V).
Check ground between C1 and C2.

Hi there,

yes I tried to send both the LED test and also the original yocto sysex, but nothing seemed to happen.

Like I say, I don't get the two flashes of all the LEDs, just a very brief one flash, and this only happens sometimes. Afterwards LEDs 1-8 remain lit.

I will try to test what you suggested, thanks 8-)

Hang on... uC is the sequencer processor, IC1?

Yes it is ;)

+5v DC on pin 9 of IC1...

How do you mean to check ground between C1 and C2 ?

Dear 4teenth,

C1 and C2 are crystal decoupling capacitor connected to the ground. Check the continuity between the both capacitor and ground.
Do you have a Arduino board or a ISP programmer or a USB to Uart converter. It will be more simple to debug your µC problem.

Okay I'll check those capacitors are properly soldered, and trace the circuit to the crystal and make sure everything is as it should be.

I assume an arduino board like this would be useful?

However I'd like to do as much troubleshooting as poss without having to purchase that - I'd rather not spend extra money on something I might not have much more use for just to find out I fried the uC with the shorted out LED i mentioned in the first post - there was definitely a *pop* noise when I first powered it up
