Hello, I've been following the Nava/Yocto builds for a while and I'm looking for some advice before starting my own!
I’ve built pedals, patchbays and repaired synths before but this will be my first large build so any tips are appreciated !
Last week I picked up a Nava v1.02 kit but I'm yet to order the BOM from Mouser.
Before I do, are there any worthwhile modifications to think about before starting? I've seen someone mentioned using Tantalum capacitors for the bass and toms circuits which I would imagine makes a difference, so I’ll probably get those. I'll eventually build the secondary noise source kit if there is phasing on snare/clap.
Also I assume the BOM is up to date as this version has been out since around September 2017 ?
I've noticed problems with the previous Nava versions, but only one in the v1.02 as far as I know - Snare Decay (VCO1 Env3). Supposedly a “1Mohm resistor across C83” fixes this. Are there any problems with the MUX boards to be aware of?
As for the build, I plan on using sockets for the majority of IC's in case they need to be swapped.
I also plan on buying:
- a component tester, mainly for transistors
- new diagonal cutters
- new soldering iron - Recommendations welcome !
- antistatic mat
- antistatic brush (for cleaning)
If anyone could comment on the following also:
- is it worth buying a decent PCB holder ?
- flux cleaner vs IPA cleaning
- using a heatsink for soldering transistors or using sockets?
- preferred solder size & type ?
I have all other tools, and can borrow a nice oscilloscope from a friend.
Otherwise all that’s left to order is a case and knobs - I’m opting for the Erica case in black with white knobs when they come back in stock!

Starting a Nava v1.02 - 2018 - Any issues to be aware of?

Due to the size of the pcb, it is in my opinion not worth buying a pcb holder. I made both thee yocto and the nava, just using my cutting mat.
Flux vs IPA. Flux cleaner has IPA in it. I use both, first clean the majority with flux cleaner and a brush. Then clean up the remainder of the residue with IPA.
No use for a heat sink when soldering. Off course if this your first time soldering, I would recommend some practice. Anyway, a transistor can take some heat. I would not socket them as they will not stay well seated due to movements. I only socketed my IC's as they are a pain to desolder if needed.
Take a proper electronics solder. I used a 0.8mm.
