Would it be possible to just shift the 27C256 with the hihat sample to the one with the crash sample? Then you would know if the 27C256 with the hihat is defective or not. But, please look carefully on the schematic first to see if the pinouts are the same for the two sample-ic's. I don't know if they could be directly interchanged.

Yes it's possible to swap the EEPROM to test on another voice, when troubleshooting my very quiet hihats, I put the hihat EEPROM into the Ride circuit and it worked, so then I knew that the EEPROM was fine and that the problem was somewhere else (in my case it was the demux (IC111) which wasn't working properly).
