"Demo your 808 yocto" thread

Discuss Yocto construction and related issues
  • I posted a demo of my build to this thread a while back with positive feedback. Yesterday I received a comment on the youtube page about the toms sounding noisey(like they had reverb). I admit I was never impressed with the toms but liked the congas.

I made a new demo here
    http://youtu.be/rxAt3m2Zu8k

detailing the toms. I see the commenter's point.

    Is this normal?

Any ideas what could be causing the issue?

Or if there is an issue...
  • Just listened to some sample packs of an original 808 and the Toms also have kind of a reverb. So I guess that's the way they should sound.

  • Thanks Acid303!

This was what I thought too but I was never really into the toms on this machine but really love the congas.

Any remarks on a yocto vs. yocto comparison?

Trouble shooting may be a better place for this topic.

I'll double check on mine when I get home from work, but from memory it is only my low tom that has that sort of noise-ish tone... Actually, it sounds more like an actual tom than just a tuned tone, but it's not a sound I've heard from an 808 previously, and my Drumstation's toms didn't sound like that...
  • Actually after having a play last night it seems all of the toms do sound like that, but most apparent on the low tom

Here's a little demo of my finished Yocto:

  • https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aJJk6xlvdsU[/video]Finished my Yocto yesterday. I had some minor issues during the build, but it all sounds fine to me now.
One tip if you're starting: apply the noise circuit adaptations as described in the 808 service manual.
So here's a first test to demo the sound.
Now it's waiting for the elSchtroumph case

Here's the first recording I did from mine: https://soundcloud.com/rvooh/yocto-first-try/s-TRv0q

No issues, besides a really long BassDrum with decay open, not sure if I'll fix it  https://soundcloud.com/rvooh/yocto-kiii ... ck/s-UQZQO
Get the latest unofficial Yocto V1 firmware here.
Be sure to check the revised manual.

  • Here is a tune I made with my Yocto. Almost all of the tunes on my soundcloud use the Yocto except one or two that used an original TR-808 back when I had one.

  • Here's my yocto, just finished it last week! i used 1% metal film for all and upgraded +/-caps, did the noise section changes as per the tr808 manual, i changed 1 or 2 op amps too! didnt have a scope but had a multimeter which measured frequency so it is only 'calibrated' with that so far. I think it sounds pretty close to me! Overall very happy with it!
