Very nice of you to send the boards for free! And yes, SMD is scary before you try, but after the first attempts its not bad. Buy some cheap SMD practice boards from Ebay

Would it be possible to just shift the 27C256 with the hihat sample to the one with the crash sample? Then you would know if the 27C256 with the hihat is defective or not. But, please look carefully on the schematic first to see if the pinouts are the same for the two sample-ic's. I don't know if th...
